A free Photoshop alternative: where PhotoCraft may fit
A Photoshop alternative needs to handle your actual editing and handover requirements, not simply display layers or open a PSD. PhotoCraft is a free, open-source image editor written in Rust and listed as early alpha in the official catalogue. Assess it with representative copies of your own work.
This guide brings together published features and practical checks. It is not an independent compatibility test, and it does not promise lossless round trips for every Photoshop document.
Updated:
Early 23 October check: published versions unchanged
This limited check found no newer published release. Development docs clarify missing JPEG options in PhotoCraft and hidden-information removal in PdfCraft; they do not establish changes in the installers. Both notes belong to 23 October in Beijing time; PhotoCraft uses the official PR merge time rather than the earlier internal commit time. Direct access to X, YouTube and Google search pages was limited.
22 October check: published releases and community reports
Verified releases include PhotoCraft 0.12.0, VectorCraft 0.14.0, PdfCraft 0.11.0, FigCraft 0.9.0, Launcher 0.6.1 and new packages for the remaining Crafting Apps. They were published on 21 October UTC; some fall on 22 October in Beijing. Higher versions do not change the development labels. These releases have no FreeBSD ARM64 packages. The briefs are split by Beijing time: six releases on 21 October and eight on 22 October.
PhotoCraft 0.12.0’s official documentation still lists Generative Fill and Expand as missing. Content-aware editing and the separate AI studio are different workflows. The community browser workspace is an independent alpha, and print PR 5456 remains unmerged. These are not our own hands-on tests. Direct access to X, YouTube and Google search pages was limited.
20 October check: published releases and community reports
Verified releases include PhotoCraft 0.10.0, VectorCraft 0.13.1, PdfCraft 0.9.0, FigCraft 0.7.0 and Launcher 0.5.1. Download records for all 13 apps were checked against published packages. The original publication dates are 17–18 October UTC; these are not new releases today. FigCraft 0.7.0’s tagged documentation now includes optional agent read/write folders, which do not provide a complete operating-system sandbox.
Two reports today concern PhotoCraft brush and cursor lag and VectorCraft Pencil drawing new paths instead of editing. Build and environment details are incomplete; we have not reproduced the reports or verified a fix. Direct access to X, YouTube and Google was limited, so coverage is incomplete.
Why look for a free Photoshop alternative?
Recurring costs, access to source code and the ability to work locally can all matter. Write down the tasks you need: background removal, colour adjustments, compositing, text, web images or print output. Verify the functions you rely on before changing tools.
If you have an Adobe subscription, check your own plan and cancellation terms before ending it. We do not assume an Australian subscription price or a particular cancellation fee. Test the replacement workflow first so that the financial decision accounts for the work you actually need to deliver.
What PhotoCraft offers
PhotoCraft is part of the Craft Apps catalogue. Its official material describes layers, masks, text, adjustments and layered PSD and PSB files. Treat these descriptions as the developer’s account of the software, rather than proof of identical results for all Photoshop features.
A familiar layout can help you begin, but shortcuts, rendering and advanced functions still need checking. Saving and reopening your work reliably matters more than recognising the toolbar.
PhotoCraft and Photoshop: nine checks that matter
Use this comparison to plan your own trial. The middle column summarises published capabilities; the final column describes what remains to be checked. These are not scores from testing carried out by this site.
| Requirement | Official PhotoCraft description | Check with your files |
|---|---|---|
| Layers and masks | Layer and mask editing is described | Groups, blending, opacity and mask edges |
| PSD and PSB files | Layered opening and saving is advertised | Structure after editing, saving and reopening |
| Text | Type tools are described | Fonts, wrapping, spacing and final layout |
| Non-destructive adjustments | Adjustment layers are described | Required settings and the resulting image |
| Smart objects | Smart objects and smart filters are described | Embedded content, linked assets and used effects |
| Colour handling | ICC management and several colour modes are described | Profiles, soft proofing and the required export |
| Selections and cut-outs | On-device selection tools are described | Hair, fine edges and transparency |
| Plug-ins and automation | No general Photoshop equivalence established here | Every essential plug-in, script and shared action |
| Generative AI | No equivalence with Adobe services established here | Exact features, model terms and any service costs |
Can PhotoCraft open a layered PSD?
The official page advertises opening and saving layered PSD and PSB documents. That does not establish that every effect, font or complex object in your document survives unchanged. We have not run an independent round-trip test for your workflow.
Duplicate a representative file and keep a reference export. Make a small edit in PhotoCraft, save under a different name and reopen the result. If a colleague or client receives a PSD, also check it in their destination application. Compare text, effects, dimensions, transparency and colour before treating the exchange as successful.
Print, plug-ins and generative AI need separate decisions
For print, the presence of CMYK or ICC support alone does not establish a press-ready result. Confirm the printer’s profile, proofing requirements and export specification, then ask them to validate a representative output. Colour features are a starting point for that process.
Check Photoshop plug-ins, actions, scripts and generative features individually. The Craft Apps, ArtCraft’s AI offerings and Adobe services are different products. Similar names do not establish matching capabilities, rights or charges. Keep a working alternative for a function that has not passed your checks.
Who should try it, and who should keep a fallback?
PhotoCraft may suit learning and personal projects when you can allow time for alpha limitations. Start with a small, reversible task and retain the original files. Compare the complete result before expanding the scope.
For a tight deadline, a complex PSD or a specified print delivery, keep an established workflow until the complete handover has been validated. A suitable software licence and a technically reliable result are separate requirements.
Try PhotoCraft on your operating system
Use the official Launcher or the standalone PhotoCraft releases. Choose the operating system, processor architecture and package actually offered for the selected release. Read its installation notes before opening the file.
Start with a new, small document, then a copy of a representative PSD. A successful launch establishes that the app starts on that machine; it does not validate a client-ready document or every export format.
Frequently asked questions
Does PhotoCraft fully replace Photoshop?
No blanket replacement claim is justified here. PhotoCraft is listed as early alpha. The answer depends on the editing features, files, colour workflow, plug-ins and outputs you need.
Will all my PSD layers stay editable?
Official PSD and PSB support does not guarantee complete fidelity for every document. Check a copy from opening through editing, saving, reopening and delivery in the recipient’s application.
Is PhotoCraft free photo-editing software?
The official project describes it as free and open source. Check whether its actual functions suit your task. Free access and an open-source licence are different properties when comparing other software.
Do I need an Australian version of PhotoCraft?
This guide does not identify a separate Australian application build. Choose the official package for your operating system and processor, and check interface settings in that version.
Can I use it for paid client work?
Read the application licence and the terms for your assets and services. Also validate the file workflow and delivery requirements: permission to use software does not guarantee reliable results for a client.
